These recent fires in London show how fires in flats have the potential for rapid external fire spread and the difference the type of construction can make.

Considering the chances of rapid external fire spread has to be considered in every fire risk assessment which can have an impact on the fire evacuation plan that you adopt.

I have said before that I believe some modern day construction materials are cheaper, more flammable and more likely to cause this type of external fire spread.  Ironic when you think people have never paid for more for residential buildings.

You must always be care careful when disposing off barbecues and cigarette ends as often these can start fires a long time after you think they have been extinguished.

Cigarette ends and disposable barbecues can still smoulder for hours in a rubbish bag so it’s important to take care not only when using a barbecue or having a cigarette but once you are finished with them.

I would be pretty furious if I was a resident in this high rise block of flats in Southampton.    One resident receiving a bill of nearly £10,000 due to increases in management charges.

How is it these charges should fall to innocent residents?

This flat fire in Manchester started in a kitchen.  Fortunately it didn’t spread to many other parts of the building.

Fires commonly start in kitchens with one of the biggest causes being cooking left unattended.  Sometimes occupants forget they have put the oven on or get distracted and this can lead to an accidental kitchen fire.
