This fire in a block of flats in London actually started in the communal areas. LFB had to make some rescues and praised the closed flat entrance doors which stopped the fire spreading into the flats.
On the vast majority of occasions, the fire starts in a flat itself and a self-closing fire door stops the fire spreading into the communal areas so that other residents can safely make their escape.
But it works both ways and all compartments need protecting in their own right.
